Varsity tennis doubles partners junior Abigail Ruck and senior Briana Rayhaun play out a point against Woodbridge High School. September 10 2013.

A few days after finishing 4th place in the Lightning Invitational, the girls’ varsity tennis team was defeated 2-16 by Woodbridge High School on Sept. 10.

Doubles partners junior Amira Tarsadia and sophomore Jaclyn Gerschultz were the only team members to win a round against the powerful Woodbrige High School players.

But through this loss, the team learned an important lesson.

“We need to strive harder, reach for the highest goals possible. It’s so important to make everything count as if it was match point,” tennis coach A.G. Longoria said. “Even if the team is down 0-10, I still expect them to play the game with focused determination.”

The team’s next game will be the Compass Invitational tournament at The Tennis Club on Sept. 13 against Crean Lutheran High School and JSerra Catholic High School.

“After today’s match, we’re going to make every practice count more than ever,” tennis team captain and senior Mara Beard said. “We want to play with more mental and physical strength in upcoming matches.”
