Junior tennis player Katelyn Harvey prepares to serve in a game against Edison High School on Sept. 4, 2013.

The girls’ varsity tennis team began its season quickly, already solidifying a balanced roster of 16 girls, which included 12 returning players and three new freshmen.

Even though the season just started a month ago, they already played in three weekend tournaments and seven non-league matches. They are preparing for Academy League match play, which starts today.

The non-league matches have been a success, and they have beaten three Division I schools. The team defeated Edison High School 9-9 (won by games 72-64) on Sept. 10, Mater Dei High 13-5 on Sept. 16 and Woodbridge High School on Sept. 18.

“It [winning] gives us a lot of confidence going into league. Of course we want to keep improving, and we just have to keep enhancing what we are doing so far. We have the chance to our team stronger,” said freshman Maya Byrd.

Part of their success lays in the new freshmen superstars, Stephanie Beder, Isabella Deckey and Byrd. All are experienced tennis players who have contributed much to the team’s success.

Returning players have practiced throughout the summer to prepare for season, as well. They have also brought their tennis experience, bringing in a fresh balance between returning and new players in the team.

“I think we have a lot of potential to grow together as a team. The win over Mater Dei was huge for us, and it shows that we have the ability to defeat Division I schools even though we are in Division II,” said junior Connie Yu.

With Academy League matches starting very soon, all of these matches have improved their playing skills and strategy. The new players have learned how to endure through hours of match play, while the returning ones have kept their discipline strong.

“Going into league, I feel like we are very prepared after playing multiple tournaments and tough teams, like CdM and Newport Harbor,” said assistant tennis coach Diane Rettew, “I think that we have some real talent, little hungry tigers, and that combined with the seasoned experienced players creates a good synergy and balance for our team.”
