Tennis Starts Season With a Strike, Defeats Edison 10-8

Defeating Edison High School 10-8, the girls’ varsity tennis team won the season’s first match for the first time in 13 years on Sept. 5.

Edison High School’s singles and doubles players were strong competition, and after tying 3-3 in the first 2 rounds victory could have gone to either team.

But Sage pulled ahead and won 4-2 in the final round.

Key contributors to their tennis team’s victory, doubles partners senior Briana Rayhaun and sophomore Connie Yu swept all three of their games.

“We knew that this was going to be a close match, and every single point counts, so we tried our very hardest to finish it off, and we did,” senior Briana Rayhaun said.

The team is looking forward to playing again on Sept. 6 in the 13th Annual Girls’ Lightning Invitational tournament against Tesoro High School, Newport Harbor High School and St. Margaret’s Episcopal School.

The competition is going to be tough, but the girls-and their coaches-are excited for the challenge.

“We’re looking forward to it,” tennis coach A.G. Longoria said. “The win today will just keep motivating us to always give 110 percent effort and to work even harder for the future.”
