Reaching the Mountaintop in Memory of MLK
The play, The Mountaintop, by Katori Hall depicts Dr. Martin Luther King’s life the night before he was killed. The entire play takes place in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel on the eve of his assassination on April 4, 1968.
In 2009, the original production won the Olivier Best New Play Award and was nominated for Whatsonstage Awards as well as Most Promising Playwright in the Evening Standard Awards. In 2011, the play premiered on Broadway starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.
With such a critically acclaimed piece of art, it was an honor to have a professional reading performed at The Studio at Sage Hill. Directed by theatre teacher Mary Robinson, the reading starred Broadway actors Albert Jones and Sophina Brown.
The remarkable reading was followed by a talk-back between the cast and the audience about the civil rights movement, African American rights today, and how we can “pass the baton” to effect change in our own communities.
With the support of the Producers Circle and Robinson, Sage Hill School has the opportunity to experience sophisticated, genuine works of art such as The Mountaintop that inspire us to better, more empathetic people who care and strive for a more just world.
