The clubs at Sage Hill have a vast selection of options that have something for everyone. One of these various clubs is the highly accomplished Feminist Club that is run by junior Nancy Xu. Club member Aava Ghorbanian, the club’s head of arts, hosted Mojan Mozaffari to speak at their Iranian Women’s Rights Seminar to learn more about the circumstances of women’s rights in different parts of the world right now.
Mozaffari is an Iranian activist who shares her feelings and spreads awareness about the oppression women face in Iran through her potent art and speeches. Speaking at Sage, she presented her artwork and discussed the experiences she and other Iranian females faced with the Iranian government’s violence towards the idea of women’s rights. Their inhuman brutality was a sensitive and fragile topic, yet a valuable conversation as club members were able to share their thoughts and continue to gain awareness on the happenings in Iran. Revealing the government’s cruelty, she explained punishments such as jailing, shooting out an eye and raping protesters, which were challenges that women would face as they tried to stand up for themselves and the women around them.
Members of the club state how it was a very informational yet heartfelt experience that they are grateful they got to hear.
“It was really interesting to have a Persian speaker come to talk about the troubles she had been through and it just helped us to learn a lot more about the situation regarding women’s rights,” a member of the club, Shawn Huan said.
As one of the most successful and popular seminars hosted by a student-run club, the Feminist Club is excited to have more influential speakers to come in the future.
