Q&A with Golfer Mary Shin

How was the golf season?

The whole experience this year was completely different from last year’s.  At first it was interesting because, surprisingly, there weren’t any freshmen on our team this year. Usually freshmen make up the majority of the team. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed my season. First of all, I played better. But more importantly, I bonded so much more with my teammates. It was all so much fun. The bus rides were not boring because our team had grown a lot closer. I think this helped us play better when we were out on the course because we were having fun. We won a lot of matches, and I especially want to point out that Michelle was a great playing partner this season and I will miss her so much next year.

What were the most important factors in your success this season?

First of all, my supportive teammates, coaches, and family. I feel like the main reason their support really helped me is because they made me happy and I was able to have so much more fun than usual this season. I just felt so comfortable with my swing this season, and everything went pretty smoothly.

How are you looking to improve for next year?

There is always a lot of room for improvement. I am looking to improve by practicing more, of course, but also learning to relax a bit more on the course. Golf is one of those sports where people tend to stress out and get really tense during competitions, and many people, including myself, forget to have fun sometimes. My teammates this year helped me get rid of some of this stress because they were very supportive and knew how to make me smile and laugh so much to the point where I had tears in my eyes. Also, I think yoga helped me let out some of that tension because it really calms my nerves.

What do you do during offseason?

During the offseason, I still do a lot. I practice every day, and I go to my coach once a week and train with my fitness coach twice a week. I always enjoy my time with these coaches because they also unintentionally act as mental trainers too. They help me let out my daily stress because I always have fun and talking with them helps me feel better. In addition to meeting with my coaches every week, I usually compete in tournaments on weekends. My season (other than my season at Sage) is busiest in the summer. All the other months of the year are, I guess, preparation for the summer.

How was your CIF experience?

CIFs were pretty much similar to last year’s. After playing at Santa Ana CC for the Academy League Individuals Championship, I went on to Dad Miller GC, where I made the cut to play at Western Hills CC for the Southern Section Championship. I did not qualify for the next round, which was the same thing that happened to me last year. I really hope I can make it to the last round, which will probably be held at the prestigious Poppy Hills GC. That is my goal for the next two years at Sage.

Tell us a little about yourself other than golf.

Other than golf, I enjoy singing. It’s been a part of my life ever since elementary school. A couple of my favorite bands/artists are Imagine Dragons, Taylor Swift, Daft Punk, Prince and Gorillaz. I also really love to travel, and one of my big goals in life is to travel all around the world. If I wasn’t into golf, I’d probably shoot for careers like being a rhythmic gymnast or an extraordinary chef on Cutthroat Kitchen or something.

All in all, I enjoyed my sophomore season with all my teammates and I am really looking forward to a great 2016 fall season!
