El Dia De Los Muertos at Sage

Spanish classes explored El Dia De Los Muertos, the day celebrating the dead in Spanish speaking countries, by participating in different activities to help students have a better understanding of its meaning.

Lynn Oliva’s level 4 class drew and painted a portrait of Frida Kahlo. It was the center of the offering set in the lower D. Diane Anderson H Building language wall. “I had a lot of fun and enjoyed helping each other draw,” commented sophomore Genesis Gonzalez. Everyone crowded around the table figuring out what each person was going to paint and what kind of strokes they should be using.

In Spanish classes, students made masks and decorated them with different designs and colors. They used plastic masks to make different Catarinas and used sharpies to decorate them. Each student put their masks on the offering table.

Diego Izurieta’s class made tombs and made a small offering also. They presented it to the class and described what each object they had brought meant to them. Their small gravestones had the life story of the person they had lost.

Art classes took part in decorating the boards with painting on metal and placing them around the offering in the lower D. Diane Anderson H Building. “I had a wonderful time learning about the culture and simultaneous having a great time,” stated sophomore Niva Razin. The altar celebrating El Dia de Los Muertos looks beautiful with all the help of Spanish classes and art each contributing something special for everything to come together beautifully. All the classes had fun while learning from a different culture and participating in new traditions.
