Addams Family Opens This Weekend
With a cast of over 30 members, a lot is happening in the Black Box as preparations are made for the upcoming musical, the Addams Family. The musical, centered around the Addams family and their creepy home located in Central Park, follows the story of eighteen-year-old Wednesday, who happens to develop feelings for a boy under the name of Lucas Beineke. The day Lucas and his family come in the evening to visit the Addams residence and join them for dinner, a series of bizarre and unusual things occur.
The school musical is expected to take place this Thursday and Friday from 7-10 p.m., and this Saturday from 2-5 p.m. as well as 7-10 p.m.
“I can’t wait to see the finished product. It’s an amazing musical with a ton of humor and elaborate dancing and lighting,” sophomore Julia Blatz said.
As the musical nears, excitement is at its height. In addition to the excitement shrouding opening night, cast members have shared a few other things they are really looking forward to.
“I’m very…excited about the number ‘One Normal Night.’ It’s one of the most lively songs in the show,” sophomore Jack Reader said.
In preparing for the musical, several cast members have also admitted to encountering individual challenges. Among these challenges have been stage fright, memorizing choreography, difficult vocal ranges and learning to work with the costumes and set.
“In the beginning I was terrified because my character is a soprano…For a while I could barely hit any of the notes consistently, but within a few weeks, my voice grew a lot stronger,” Blatz said.
For many cast members, the experience in preparing for the musical has been very worthwhile. On top of the three hour daily rehearsals, some wonderful memories have been made.
“[I’ve] really [loved] learning the scenes and music, but also spending time with the cast. [We’ve] become so close, like a family,” sophomore Kate Kelly said.
For others, favorite memories have been more so focused around watching their peers practice and fit into their roles.
“My favorite part so far of the musical [has been] watching all of the principals [main roles] get into their character,” sophomore Aimee Rowe said.
With rehearsals having started in November and lasting typically three hours per day, there isn’t much the cast is worried about. Now that it’s Tech Week, rehearsals are expected to take place from about 3-8 p.m.
“I’m honestly not worried for anything. I think the cast can totally pull this off,” Blatz said.
