Fire Alarm Set Off Wed. by Chemistry Demonstration

A firefighter prepares to leave after determining that the building is safe to enter on Sept. 10.

Smoke from a chemistry demonstration triggered the fire alarm in the chemistry lab of the Lisa Argyros and Family Science Center on Wed. at 9:38 a.m.

Students, teachers and staff evacuated to Ramer Field. There were no injuries or building damage, and the Newport Beach Fire Dept. determined that the situation was safe at around 9:55 p.m, the beginning of D Block.

The chemistry lab is equipped with a fire suppression sprinkler system and fire extinguishers.

“Chemistry labs inherently will create smoke and vapors which will set off smoke detectors,” said Kerry Langdale, Science Dept. chair.

The fire alarms, required by California building code, were previously set to the highest level of sensitivity, according to Torrey Olins, Director of Communications and Marketing. The school is in the process of adjusting the sensitivity of the alarms so they will not be triggered by chemistry experiments in the future.

“The good news is everyone responded really well and followed the correct evacuation protocol,” Langdale said.
