Boys’ Golf Fights Through the Season

The boys’ golf team performed well last spring, finishing with a 6-2 record in the Academy League and 7-5 overall.  Their hard play earned them second place in league.  Though the team did not go to CIFs, then freshman Brandon Tsu did qualify for CIF Individuals.

“[It was a] whole different challenge than what I encountered during the golf season,” Tsu said of his experience at CIFs. “I had to step up my game.” Though he narrowly missed qualifying for the next round, Tsu felt that he learned a lot from the experience.

“We played well last year, and we scored well,” said junior captain Max Liu.  This year, Liu strove to top last season’s performance and win the Academy League title.

Junior captain Max Nanula reflected on the last season from a different angle.  “We had a good group of players but we were not well bonded as a team,” he said.  Nanula hoped that his efforts to draw the team closer together would lead to a more successful and enjoyable season this year.

This season, the varsity and JV teams fielded a total of 28 players, including five seniors.  Early on, the large amount of players proved to be an organizational challenge for both teams, according to Liu.  Both teams occupied the same area, and it was difficult to practice with so many people present at once.

In addition, the team did not play any preseason matches, beginning league without a chance to gauge their ability outside of practice.  Their first league match resulted in a loss against St. Margaret’s.

Despite a rough start, both Liu and Nanula planned to continue fighting and finish off the season as well as possible.
