Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team Undefeated in Matches…and in Games

Sage’s girls’ varsity tennis team has done something never seen before in the school’s history: they won their first three matches with perfect scores of 18-0.

“It is so incredible that we have gotten this far, and I think it speaks to the motivation and well-roundedness of our team this year,” junior Michele Chen said.

But, even though the team, led by senior captains Jaclyn Gerschultz, Celine Wang, Connie Yu and Marina Anderson, has a strong roster, they were able to achieve their victories through hard work and determination.

“This is why we work [the girls] so hard in the weeks leading up to the [tennis] season. These things don’t just happen overnight or by luck,” coach A.G. Longoria said.

To prepare the team for the season, Longoria hosts three tournaments, the Lightning Invitational, Prep Classic and Coast Cup, in addition to planning matches against top Division I teams in Orange County.

“I am so proud of how far our team has gotten…these things happen,” Longoria said.

Currently, the team is ranked fourth in the CIF-SS Division II top ten weekly poll, and they will play their top rival, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, on Tuesday.
