The Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League (OCIEL) is composed of riders from multiple schools around Orange County. Students and their horses compete over multiple weekends during the school year to gain points for year-end awards.

Last year, Sage’s equestrian team took home the year-end award for reserve champion in J.V. Overall School, beating both St. Margaret’s and Crean Lutheran. The team’s co-captains, seniors Rebecca Fudge and Paula Gardner, look to continue the team’s success this year.

“Our first show was a huge success, with four riders competing in the varsity division and earning great ribbons. Various injuries, both for horses and riders, led to a less victorious second show, but I think we’ll be back and winning by the end of the season,” Fudge explained.

At the end of the show season, OCIEL holds medal finals, an event Fudge looks forward to.

“[I am looking forward to] a shot at redemption in medal finals! I made one fatal error in my round last year that kept me out of the top places, so I hope to show better this year,” she said.

Being a small group, the equestrian team has grown very close. When asked about her favorite part of OCIEL, Fudge said, “The girls on the team, definitely. We have so much fun and we’re deeply bonded in our love of horses.”

The next competition is Jan. 10 and 11 at Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park.
