Waterpolo: Seniors Accept Their Seniority
Water polo competed against some of the best teams in the league during a tournament Sept. 25-26 playing Buena Park and Millikan high schools, both Division 2 teams, and Woodbridge High School, a Division 1 team. At the half, the team led Woodbridge 8-5, but lost 17-10.
Seniors Jack Preston (position 5) and Michael Phan (utility player) hoped to work on better team communication in future games.
Both explained what it is like being looked up to as some of the oldest on the squad.
Phan began playing freshman year. “It’s kind of odd being the oldest because you still have this sense that you’re still a sophomore or a freshman, so it’s kind of weird having that leadership responsibility,” Phan said.
Preston describes the seniority he has grown into as “a big leadership role. I have the role of teaching the other players things they should know about the sport such as passing, shooting and positioning techniques.”
After beginning his water polo career sophomore year, Preston was invited to play Division 3 at Chapman University but declined to pursue lacrosse.
“We have some great freshmen on the team and are excited for the year to come,” Phan stated.
