Season Preview: New Coach, Next Steps for Football
Coach Tom Kirchmeyer and his football team hope to match last season’s 5-5 success and their wildcard entry into the CIF Southern Section Division VI despite the loss of Gregory “J.R.” Tolver as their coach.
Athletes have been working throughout the summer — strategizing, conditioning and learning plays in order to make the most of this season. The coaches are working to hone the talent of players like senior Keith “CJ” McCord, senior Vincent Wetmore, junior Jacob Fisher, senior Zachary Burns and senior Beaumont Roth who hope to make an impact on the season.
Because of the reduced roster this season, most players play both sides of the ball.
“It is important that each player have skills in defense, offense and special teams,” said coach Tom Kirchmeyer, former offensive coordinator. “This season will feature an exciting class of offensive and defensive talent.”
Seniors contribute a large part to the team’s success as leaders and athletes. “Great leaders and athleticism are going to give us the opportunity to win a lot of games this year and make a run at a league championship,” said Kirchmeyer.
The 42-7 loss to Calvary Chapel Santa Ana at home last Friday still showed the potential of the team. They beat Fairmont Prep Friday night 42-20 in their second game. During practice coaches stressed the importance of pass protection, focus and endurance.
“A small team like this requires total participation,” Kirchmeyer said. “Our team is ready to take that next step.”
