Sage Hill students, teacher, parents and staff gather in front of the Lisa Argyros and Family Science Center on Aug. 25.

As freshmen flocked through Sage Hill’s gates, they witnessed another momentous occasion: the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Lisa Argyros and Family Science Center.

“The entire community will benefit from this new venue for science instruction, education and collaboration,” said Gordon McNeill, president of Sage Hill School, in his opening words.

It certainly seemed that the entire community was there, as he and Kerry Langdale, Science Dept. chair, addressed a densely packed crowd clustered outside the building. Students, parents, faculty and community members including Newport Beach City Council representative Keith Curry were present for the ceremony on the morning of Aug. 25.

McNeill also recognized contributors such as the Caillouette, Booth and Uberroth families, along with John Eckel, Joel Lipman, Mike Bolen and others who were instrumental in the construction process.

Excitement centered on the sand-colored, foliage-surrounded building after the year-long wait for students since construction began.

“We’re excited and privileged to work in this new innovative space. It will be a hub for student learning,” said Langdale.

Langdale explained the intended goals and impressive features of the center.  Glass allows students to engage with the environment outside; the large classrooms have flexible layouts and roll up doors in the physics area.

“We plan a collaborative use of the building with our Service Learning partner organizations,” he said. The center will also foster collaboration through its special projects lab.

“Thank you to everyone for helping bring to reality the Lisa Argyros and Family Science Center which will enrich the experience at Sage Hill School,” Langdale said in his welcoming remarks.
