New Team, New Game for Boys’ Varsity Volleyball
Fresh out of senior players, the boys’ varsity volleyball team, including four freshmen, regenerated its skill and potential for success.
“This season, the team was completely different because of all the seniors leaving,” junior Matthew Chen said. “We improved a lot over a short amount of time. The setting got better, our passing was more accurate and our hitting technique got better. Even though these are the basics that varsity players should be good at, we got the hang of it quickly.”
With a current record of 2-10 and three more games in the season, the team has focused on learning the intricacies of the sport and improving its skills. A major turning point in the season was the victory over Whitney in the team’s fifth game.
“It was our first win, so that really helped us come together and play more competitively in the next games,” freshman Parker Warden said.
A perk of playing on a team of seven members is that no player is left on the bench, as all are rotated through the different positions and gain a lot of experience.
“My favorite part about being on the team is actually contributing during games,” Chen said. “Last year, I didn’t feel like I was a part of the team because I wouldn’t usually have a lot of playing time.”
“Our team’s atmosphere is serious when it comes down to it but we also have a lot of fun when we get the opportunity,” Warden added. “The balance makes for a great overall playing environment.”
The team strives to accomplish the goals of making it to playoffs, gaining a following of fans and returning even stronger next year.
“We have come a long way in the short time that we have been playing together. We have majorly improved in communicating and court presence, as in being confident, not worrying about our mistakes and focusing on the next play,” Warden said. “We’ve had a major swing in skill level as well. In the beginning of the season, I don’t think any of us thought we would have improved so much, so I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
