Water Polo’s Victory in the Rain, vs. Godinez
After a rainy day Oct. 9, the varsity water polo team continued to clash in the pool against their league rivals, Godinez Fundamental High School.
Junior Zachary Drobenko, a varsity water polo player of two years plays his role as a goalie. “You can’t let a little rain phase [out] your will to play. You have to do what you go to do,” Drobenko said. “We came out there and played a great game. Everybody just seemed to be in the right place at the right time.”
Drobenko’s 25 saves in goal, as well as senior Arya Nakhjavani’s seven scored goals off eight attempts, resulted in a 16-8 victory for the varsity. Along with these individual performances, two solid performances were turned in by senior Ryan Sung and sophomore Christopher Wan, who both scored three goals each.
In the junior varsity game, the entire team worked together to get 13 steals and won 8-6. Sophomore Rachael Jaffe made 12 saves, freshman Wyatt Manolakas scored four goals and Drobenko tallied three goals and five steals.
“They [Godinez] were a good team,” Drobenko said, “but we outperformed them.”
The varisty water polo team is leading in both its overall record with 8-4 and league record with 1-0.
