Sage Hill’s varsity football team proved its endurance and determination with its 37-30 victory against the Trojans of Silver Valley High School Oct. 11.

After the hard battle fought by both sides that resulted in a 20-20 tie, the referees extended the game into overtime NCAA style.  Little did anyone know, the game would be extended by not just one but four overtimes.

In the first, both teams scored a touchdown and the subsequent point after touchdown (PAT). Following this, the Lightning defense forced the Trojans to kick—and score—a field goal.

With Silver Valley scoring three points during its procession, Sage Hill attempted to end the tie.  But, like the Trojans, they were forced to kick a field goal as well.

Sage Hill had another opportunity to seize the game in the third overtime after the defense forced a fumble recovery at the 9 yard line, but an incomplete pass forced additional overtime.

Finally in the fourth overtime, junior Logan Cook scored a touchdown from the one and senior Will Burns scored the PAT, resulting in a 37-30 Sage lead.

The Trojans, desperate to continue the game on a fourth down and 10, were forced to throw a long pass, but superb coverage from sophomore Alfonso Corona secured the win for the Lightning.

Junior running back Beaumont Roth and senior jack-of-all-trades Will Burns had monster games. Roth rushed for 121 yards in 27 carries while receiving 46 yards and scoring two touchdowns; Burns recorded 90 receiving yards, 19 solo tackles, 4 PATs, a field goal and a touchdown.

Sage Hill’s varsity played an away game against undefeated (5-0) rival Saint Margaret’s Episcopal School Tartans Oct. 18.
