Girls’ Tennis Dominates Newport Harbor, 11-7 Victory
While switching sides in a tennis doubles match, freshmen Paige Reyna and Crystal Yu ran to the bathroom to refocus and maintain their patience.
Tied at a critical point in the second round against the number one doubles team of Newport Harbor High School, they were becoming emotionally agitated by this challenge. But, they came back and won 7-6 by winning a 7-5 tiebreaker.
“Every match counts, and in the second round, Crystal and I just had to stay focused to win the match. We began to make some careless errors, so obviously we became distressed, but we pulled ourselves together,” Reyna said. “We weren’t going to let our emotions get in the way of our goal.”
This win was crucial to the match against Newport Harbor High School on Sept. 24, and the girls’ varsity tennis team ended up defeating the Sailors 11-7, their first in three years.
“Pressure is a privilege,” tennis coach A.G. Longoria said. “It means that we believe in ourselves. The bar for League has been raised, and we are going to work harder to reach it.”
