Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team Aces League

The girls’ varsity tennis team is the Academy League champion and finished the season with a 17-1 win against Crean Lutheran. They lost in the first round of CIF to San Clemente High School 15-3.

Miya Stauss and Karina Grover were the only freshman additions to the team, joining first-year coach Cierra Gaytan.

“Our new coach has influenced us during our season be the girls’ tennis coaching staff this year was head coach because she has pushed us to our maximum,” freshman Stauss said. “It helps that she knows what hard work looks like and it inspires us to put in 110 percent during practice and matches. She
has done a lot [for] this team and I am really grateful.”

One tough moment the varsity tennis team experienced during season was their match against Corona del Mar High School. They lost 11-7 yet it was a great improvement from last year.

“The toughest match was definitely against CDM,” said sophomore Michelle Hung. “Although we lost, it was the best we’ve ever done against them.”

One of the best moments the team experienced during the season was playing against Newport Harbor. They were not a league team, but they still provided some tough competition for the girls.

“I would say one of the best times this season was when the girls beat Newport Harbor. Not only because they won, but because they were all cheering for each other and it felt very much like we had a great team bond,” Gaytan said.

Though CIF has come to an end, this tennis season is definitely one that the girls won’t forget.

“My highlights of the season were beating division 1 schools including Santa Margarita, Mater Dei, and Newport Harbor, and winning league!” Hung said.
